San Diego Comic-Con 2014 – Day 3

Jul 30, 2014 Posted by in Features | Comments

Saturday of Comic-Con was a Syfy-heavy day of press rooms. (I’ll be posting videos from the press rooms soon, starting with those shows that are currently airing.)

The morning started off with a quick breakfast with @TheTVAholic, and then I headed to the Hilton Bayfront for the Helix press room. We spoke with cast members Kyra Zagorsky (Dr. Julia Walker), Mark Ghanime (Major Sergio Balleseros), Jordan Hayes (Dr. Sarah Jordan) and Neil Napier (Dr. Peter Farragut), as well as Executive Producer Steven Maeda. We got some hints as to the changes coming in season 2.

Next up was the press room for Gotham, the new before-he-was-Batman series coming to FOX. While there were a lot of cast members in the room, we only got to speak with two of them—Ben McKenzie (“Detective James Gordon”) and Donal Logue (“Detective Harvey Bullock”)— as well as executive producers Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon. Curt Wagner of RedEye Chicago was also at my table, and he was able to arrange a quick 2-minute interview with Robin Taylor (“Oswald Cobblepot” aka “The Penguin”) just as the room was emptying.

After that it was back to Syfy and the press room for Defiance, where we spoke with stars Julie Benz (“Amanda Rosewater”), Stephanie Leonidas (“Irisa”), Jaime Murray (“Stahma Tarr”) and Jesse Rath (“Alak Tarr”), as well as Executive Producer Kevin Murphy. Stars Grant Bowler (“Nolan”) and Tony Curran (“Datak Tarr”) were also there, but never made it to our table.

My final press room for the day was for the upcoming Syfy series Ascension, which centers around a space ship launched in 1963 with 600 passengers on a 100 year mission to save humanity. We were able to to speak with stars Tricia Helfer (“Viondra Denninger”), Brian Van Holt (“Captain William Denninger”), Andrea Roth (“Juliet Bryce”) and Al Sapienza (“Councilman Rose”), as well as Executive Producer Philip Levens.

I finished out my day with the annual NBC Comic-Con Party, where they had talent from Constantine, Grimm and Hannibal. I also saw the folks from Sharknado 2 as well as “Big Mike” from Chuck. This year’s venue was the rooftop of the Hotel Solomar, which was a really nice from previous years because it was more open and brighter, and there was no loud music preventing people from talking. There was a menu of NBC-themed drinks to choose from, and they had all kinds of Mexican finger-food as well as sliders and fries, and sushi. At the end of the night, waiters walked around with mini frozen milkshakes and cookies.

It was great opportunity to reconnect with fellow bloggers and press folks, and I also managed to get a photo with Bryan Fuller.
