San Diego Comic-Con 2014 – Day 2

Jul 28, 2014 Posted by in Features | Comments

Friday of Comic-Con was another day filled with press rooms. (I’ll be posting videos from the press rooms soon.)

The morning started off with the Bones press room, which was limited to just executive producer Stephen Nathan and star Emily Deschanel. Unfortunately David Boreanaz was still on set, and wouldn’t arrive in San Diego until later in the day for the panel.

Next up was the press room for Wayward Pines, a new 10-episode event thriller coming to FOX later this year. The series is based on the bestselling novel Pines by Blake Crouch and brought to life by suspenseful storyteller M. Night Shyamalan. We spoke to cast members Matt Dillon, Melissa Leo, Toby Jones, Carla Gugino, Shannyn Sossamon, Tim Griffin and Charlie Tahan, as well as executive producer Chad Hodge. There was a bit of chaos in the press room as Jaden Smith was hanging out (dressed in a white Batman costume) at the table next to ours , and lots of celebs were stopping by to say hi.

In celebration of the 55th anniversary of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and DreamWorks Animation have created a new Rocky and Bullwinkle short that will appear on the upcoming release of Mr. Peabody & Sherman on Blu-ray and DVD on October 14. So in my next press room I spoke with director Gary Trousdale and executive producer/Bullwinkle Studios president Tiffany Ward (daughter of Jay Ward).

Next up was the press room for the new series from Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, iZombie, which will premiere midseason on The CW. We spoke with series stars Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley and David Anders, as well as executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright.

Next I headed to the press room for Syfy’s Dominion to speak with stars Chris Egan (Alex Lannon), Tom Wisdom (Archangel Michael), Roxanne McKee (Claire Riesen), Alan Dale (General Riesen), Anthony Stewart Head (Senator David Whele) and executive producer Vaun Wilmott. Our table felt a little unprepared as we had not seen the latest episode which had aired the night before. (But it was so cool to get to speak with “Giles”!)

My last press room of the day was for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Marvel’s Agent Carter, where I was able to speak with stars Clark Gregg (‘Phil Coulson’), Brett Dalton (‘Grant Ward’), Chloe Bennet (‘Skye’), Iain de Caestecker (‘Leo Fitz’), Elizabeth Henstridge (‘Jemma Simmons’) and Hayley Atwell (‘Agent Peggy Carter’), as well as executive producers Jeph Loeb, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell, Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas, Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, and Louis D’Esposito.

I finished out my day with my first (and only) panel of the con, Nobility On Earth. The upcoming series stars an amazing array of stars from other genre shows in a comedy that is described as Firefly meets The Office. Among the panel members were Christopher Judge (Stargate SG-1), Torri Higginson (Stargate Atlantis) and Doug Jones (Falling Skies). Doug plays a touchy-feely doctor aboard a space ship, and was hilarious at the panel. Unfortunately he had to leave for another panel 10 minutes into this one. The series is still in production, but from the clips that were shown, it looks like it could be really fun. For more info on the show, check out nobilitytheseries.com.

The folks at Three If By Space recorded the entire panel, and scored interviews with Doug Jones and Christopher Judge:

On my way out of the convention center I always watch the ground, looking for discarded swag tickets, and today was my lucky day. A few years back I found a ticket and it ended up being for a Thor t-shirt. Hoping to get something equally as cool this time, I made the long journey to the Marriott, only to discover that the Fulfillment Room had been moved even further out this year, to the Hyatt! The whole time, I was thinking to myself, whatever this is, it better be worth all this walking! When I finally made the way to the room and looked for the booth matching my ticket, I was happy to discover it was for Legends, and that they were giving out #DontKillSeanBean t-shirts!

I made the long walk back to my hotel and prepped for the next day’s press rooms.
