With theaters around the nation closed, the film studios have been releasing a lot of recent and upcoming theatrical releases early on digital platforms in order to recoup some of their box office money. On March 13, Disney moved up the digital release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and accelerated the release of Frozen 2 onto its Disney+ platform on March 17. On March 20, the company also released Onward for digital purchase, and announced that the film would also be available on Disney+ on April 3!
Universal also released three recent theatrical films yesterday, though for a premium $20 rental price, The Invisible Man, Emma, and The Hunt. (Though, word was that the free SD rentals from Sprint and the Fandango Now rentals you can buy from Disney Movie Rewards both appeared to work with these titles.)
It was also reported that the upcoming Kumail Nanjiani & Issa Rae Comedy The Lovebirds was going to be moving to Netflix instead of its planned April theatrical release.
Here are some other upcoming early digital releases that have been announced:
March 24: Birds of Prey, Bloodshot, Dolittle, The Gentlemen, The Way Back
March 27: I Still Believe
March 31: Bad Boys for Life, Sonic the Hedgehog
April 3: Onward on Disney+
April 10: Trolls World Tour (Rental)
