Primetime Picks… 9/25/18

There is no shortage of medical dramas on TV, and tonight NBC adds another one into the mix, New Amsterdam. New Amsterdam Medical Center is the oldest public hospital in America, assisting anyone who needs help, no matter if they have insurance or can afford to pay. The medical institution not only serves its local New York City residents, but also visiting dignitaries, Presidents, and prisoners from Rikers Island. So there is always some new interesting medical case making its way through the doors.

Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold, The Blacklist) has just been hired as the institution’s new medical director, and he wastes no time making radical changes, gutting the hospital of the doctors who care more about billable hours than the well-being of their patients. Joining him on his mission to revamp the hospital and provide excellent patient care are Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman, Doctor Who), the public face of the hospital—she’s constantly making the rounds on local talk shows, doing publicity appearances; Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery, This Is Us) a talented young doctor who’s in a secret relationship with cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims, The Last Ship), the only surviving member of his department; Dr. Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine, Deadbeat), the head of the psychiatric department; and Dr. Vijay Kapoor (Anupam Kher, Sense8).

I didn’t find tonight’s premiere as action-packed and exciting out of the gate as some of this week’s other premieres, like those of returning shows 9-1-1 and The Resident. However, the series is still quite solid, and does have a lot of potential. It has a talented cast and a wonderful setting that can provide a wide variety of unique cases and patients of the week. Tonight’s premiere drops a few surprising bombs about Dr. Max Goodwin that should lead to some interesting storylines and character developments. I look forward to checking out more episodes to see where the series goes, and what kind of medical cases arise.

In tonight’s premiere, “Pilot”, a new medical director, Max Goodwin, arrives at America’s oldest hospital, where he sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care.

Tonight I’ll also be watching/recording FBI, This Is Us, The Gifted, Flipping Out, Mayans M.C., Wrecked, and The Purge.
