This Week’s New TV-on-DVD/BD Releases

Oct 29, 2012 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray | Comments

It’s a fairly light week for new TV-on-DVD/BD releases. If you haven’t already purchased the separate seasons, Warner Home Video has repackaged the existing Chuck releases into Chuck: The Complete Series – Collector Set. As someone who bought the individual seasons as they were released, I’m glad there is no exclusive new material added to this box set.

Some other highlights this week are the inaugural season of BBC America’s first original drama Copper, the A&E miniseries Coma and the fourth season of the Adult Swim series Metalocalypse.

Copper: Season One (Blu-ray + Ultraviolet and DVD)

Set in 1864 New York City, Detective Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones) returns home from the Civil War to find his daughter has been murdered and his wife has disappeared. Distraught and searching for answers, Corcoran’s relentless quest to find justice for his family fuels his pursuit to help the unfortunate residents of Five Points. Assisted by Sixth Precinct partner and friend, Detective Francis Maguire (Kevin Ryan) and Detective Andrew O’Brien (Dylan Taylor), Corcoran goes the extra mile when investigating a crime, much to the dismay of his superiors.

More often than not, Corcoran’s investigations lead him to the steps of the elite citizens of Fifth Avenue. When a young girl is murdered in Five Points, he finds himself at the home of trusted friend and Manhattan aristocrat, Robert Morehouse (Kyle Schmidt). Mustered out of the 71st regiment with Corcoran, Morehouse feels more at home with the immigrants in Five Points than with high-society types. When Corcoran digs into the girl’s murder, Morehouse sets him on the trail of those who believe their status puts them above the law. Corcoran is thrust into the contrasting worlds of elegant and corrupt Fifth Avenue, and the emerging African-American community in Northern Manhattan with secrets from the battlefield that will haunt him forever.

Bonus Features Include: Talent Commentary On Select Episodes, Deleted Scenes, “Making of” Documentary and Character Video Profiles and Featurettes.

Coma (2012 Mini-Series) (DVD)

The film is a chilling, four-hour, modern-day retelling of The New York Times bestselling novel by Robin Cook, and 1978 film written and directed by Michael Crichton. The all-star cast includes Lauren Ambrose (TV’s “Six Feet Under”), Steven Pasquale (TV’s “Rescue Me”), Academy Award winner Geena Davis (Best Actress in a Supporting Role, The Accidental Tourist, 1988), two-time Academy Award nominee James Woods (Best Actor in a Leading Role, Salvador, 1986; Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Ghosts of Mississippi, 1996), Academy Award winner Richard Dreyfuss (Best Actor in a Leading Role, The Goodbye Girl, 1977), and Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn (Best Actress, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, 1974). The miniseries also stars James Rebhorn (“Law & Order”), Joe Morton (“The Good Wife”), Michael Weston (“House”) and Joseph Mazello (“The Pacific”). In this medical thriller, a medical student (Ambrose) discovers something sinister is going on in her hospital after routine procedures send more than a few seemingly healthy patients into comas on the operating table.

A healthy patient suddenly falls into a coma. It’s not an impossible event, but it is rare. So why does it keep happening at Peachtree Memorial? Lauren Ambrose stars as Dr. Susan Wheeler in this thriller about a medical student who discovers that something sinister is going on in her hospital after routine procedures send more than a few seemingly healthy patients into comas on the operating table.

Based on the novel by Robin Cook, COMA was directed by Emmy Award winner Mikael Salomon (Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special: “Band of Brothers”) from a teleplay by John J. McLaughlin. Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, David W. Zucker, Martin Erlichman and Mikael Salomon serve as executive producers.
