If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/27/17
I have been really enjoying this latest season of The Amazing Race. Last week we had a double-dose of episodes. First, the teams were in Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where their first task was to find the Freddie Mercury House. The Detour had the teams either looking for special doors along long alleyways or hunting for keys hidden inside giant stacks of chests. At the Road Block, the teams had to make a ladle, and Brooke whined the entire time about how difficult the task was. Though, she surprisingly got help and encouragement from most of the other teams. Shamir and Sara were so far behind that Phil didn’t even wait for them to make it to the mat before sending them packing…

Today, Hulu kicked off its ten-part adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s best-selling novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. The series is set in a dystopian near future where birth rates have plummeted and a large section of the country is ruled by a militant religious group. Fertile young women are kidnapped and forced to become handmaids – surrogates for the sterile wives of the leaders of the sect. Offred (Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men, Top of the Lake) was taken a while back along with her baby, and is now on her third assignment, to bear a child for The Commander (Joseph Fiennes, American Horror Story) and his wife (Yvonne Strahovski, Chuck). In this society, people who don’t follow the rules wind up dead, so Offred has learned to keep her mouth shut and stay in line. However, she still hasn’t given up the idea of finding her daughter, and this hope is revived when she hears from handmaid Ofglen (Alexis Bledel, Gilmore Girls) that a secret resistance is forming.…

However, Hitler is starting to rise to power, and Germany is quickly becoming a dangerous place. In the late 1890s, a younger Albert (Johnny Flynn, Lovesick) finds himself bored by the slow pace of his school and wants to jump ahead to university. However, while he knows his physics, he needs a more well-rounded education in order to pass the entrance exam, and so he seeks the assistance of mentor Jost Winteoer (Nicholas Rowe, The Crown).
