Blu-ray Review: JACKASS: BEST AND LAST

Oct 06 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

I’m not a diehard Jackass fan who’s seen every episode and knows every stunt they’ve done, but I’ve seen quite a bit of the series over the decades. Jackass is a stunt show that originated on MTV over 25 years ago, following a group of guys doing very stupid and often dangerous stunts for laughs. While watching this over the decades, I have constantly wondered how none of these people have died or have been seriously maimed during making of this show. I often find myself both not wanting to look but also not not being able to look away at the same time.

Jackass: Best and Last brings Johnny Knoxville and the gang back together for one final ride—at least last’s how it’s billed, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of them in the future. The film is both a nostalgic look back at some of the gang’s favorite and unseen moments, but also features some fun new stunts, and revisits some classics for a second time. There are also some breaks in-between with some of the cast talking about working on the series, and why this film is the end.

The film adds a new cast member to the crew, a robot named 1W-Larry (voiced by Adam Ray). And guests Tory Belleci (MythBusters) and Paul Walter Hauser (Cobra Kai) pop in for a few of the stunts.

The film opens with footage from January 1998 and the birth of Jackass, with Johnny Knoxville literally shooting himself in the chest while wearing a Kevlar vest. This footage was never allowed to air on MTV, and it’s no wonder why. Like I said before, I’m shocked all of these people are still alive! Even though you know Johnny is going to be fine, this footage is so stressful to watch. The film then cuts to modern day with a wildly creative opening title sequence that introduces each of the guys seemingly breaking the laws of physics as they move around this stark room and face some kind of painful fate.

Jackass: Best and Last finds this nice blend of nostalgia with old clips while also giving fans some fun new stunt. Here is a rundown of the new segments in the film:

  • “The Robot Rectal Exam” – Steve-O gets his prostate checked (and a reach-around) by Larry the robot.
  • “Follow the Leader” – Johnny’s actions cause electric charges in Poopies arms while he tries to drink coffee, shave, etc. and while Steve-O tries to tattoo Zach.
  • “Lip Filler” – Poopies gets lip injections.
  • “The Marionettes” – Ehren, Dave and Wee Man perform a play suspended in the air while being tortured by the crew.
  • “Office Party” – the guys have an office party where Jasper is constantly attacked by Ron the ram.
  • “Pole Vault” – Chris Pontus does a naked high jump.
  • “Dum Dum Game: Part Deux“ – four competitors and guest Paul Walter Hauser sit in the hot seat and try to answer trivia questions while a naked Zach is suspended above their face, and lowered with each wrong answer.
  • Steve-O tries to poop out a ping pong ball he pretended to swallow
  • “The Balance Bean with a Taser on my Dick” – Poopies puts a shock collar on his penis and tries to walk a balance beam.
  • “human Pretzel” – The guys don plastic see0through pants and play Twister after chugging colonoscopy laxative.
  • “Escape Froom From Hell” – the guys face gross experiences and tortures as they try to advance through three puzzle rooms.
  • The group rides down a hill in a large grocery cart as explosions go off all around them.

And here is a rundown of some of the classic and unseen moments:

  • April 2002 – “Golf Course Airhorn” – the guys harass golfers by blowing airhorns just as they are about to shoot.
  • April 2000 – Johnny plays an escapee from county jail looking for a hacksaw in a hardware store.
  • April 2010 “Poo Cocktail Surprise” – Steve-O gets launched in a porta-potty.
  • April 2006 – stepping on rakes
  • “Silence of the Lambs” – tricking the cast into finding themselves in a dark room with what they believe is a rattlesnake.
  • “The Bungee Jump” – Wee Man and Preston jump off bridge tied together by a bungee cord.
  • “Bad Grandpa” – Johnny pretends to be a sex-crazed grandpa at a strip club, with his long balls hanging down.
  • September 2000 – Bam fights his father.
  • Johnny gets strapped to a rocket
  • “Tee Ball” – Steve-O gets hit in the groin by a tee-ball
  • October 2000 – Never aired footage of Johnny Knoxville getting rolled down the stairs in a box.
  • Ryan Dunn goes in an exploding porto-potty.
  • April 2002 – “Butt X-Ray” – Ryan Dunn stuffs a toy car up his butt and gets an x-ray.
  • Preston stands in a goal and has a football kicked at him.
  • July 2001 – “The Abduction” – the gang kidnaps Brad Pitt at an outdoor food stand in front of a crowd.
  • March 1999 – Johnny Knoxville gets hit by a car.
  • May 2010 – Bam gets swatted by a giant hand as he walks into work.
  • March 2010 – Ehren rides a shopping cart down an icy hill.
  • Wee Man gets in a fight at a bar and other little people first responders show up.
  • “The Magic Trick” – Johnny the Magnificent gets attacked by a bull during his act.

The film makes for a fun watch, feeling like a proper send-off for the cast. This is especially true of the final grocery cart stunt to the tune of “My Way”, and the montage of clips and outtakes throughout the credits, plus a post-credits stinger.

I don’t think this film is going to change people’s minds if they are not a fan of the series, but it does make for a nice introduction if folks are somehow unfamiliar with Jackass, and it also feels like a really nice love letter and goodbye for longtime fans of the franchise.

Paramount has released Jackass: Best and Last on Blu-ray, DVD & 4K Digital. We were sent the Blu-ray release for review, and even in HD, the presentation looks and sounds great. Both vintage clips and the new footage look good, with a clean picture and a solid audio track that captures the goofiness and mayhem of the stunts.

The Blu-ray disc is packed in a standard HD keepcase along with a glossy cardboard slipcover and an insert with instructions on how to redeem a digital copy of the movie. The disc and digital only include a single extra, which is 17 minutes of deleted scenes that play back-to-back. While this was entertaining, it would have been great to have some kind of featurette looking back on the show or more behind-the-scenes footage such as how the the creative opening title sequence was shot. Though we do get a bit of the former throughout the film during interviews with Knoxville and some of the others, and we get a peek at the latter during the montage during the end credits.
