Blu-ray Review: GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON’T DIE

“This isn’t a robbery! I am from the future! And all of this… goes horribly wrong. Horribly wrong.”

An oddly-dressed man (Sam Rockwell, Moon) who looks both homeless and something out of a post-apocalyptic film walks into Los Angeles-based Norms Diner, claiming to be from the future on a mission to save humanity from an artificial intelligence that will lead to the shut down of civilization. He looks around at the 47 patrons and staff in the diner and informs them that “there’s a correct configuration of people in this diner that perfectly combats the future and saves humanity.” This is the 117th time he’s experienced this night, and he’s determined to get things right this time. The diners look at him like he’s crazy, and perhaps he is. But the man claims to hold the detonator for a bomb, and is looking for six volunteers to join him on his quest. After rejecting some of the patrons and coercing others, the man’s team for this latest attempt consists of grieving mother Susan (Juno Temple, Ted Lasso, Fargo) who recently lost her teenage son and replaced him with a clone; teachers/couple Mark (Michael Peña, All Her Fault, Crash) & Janet (Zazie Beetz, Joker, Atlanta) whose students are obsessed with their phones; fake gangster tough guy Scott (Asim Chaudhry, People Just Do Nothing) whom the man dubs “Phony Soprano”; eager volunteer Marie (Georgia Goodman); and children’s party entertainer Ingrid (Haley Lu Richardson, The White Lotus, Five Feet Apart), who’s wearing a princess dress and is allergic to technology. The group doesn’t know what they’re about to experience, but the man warns them that not all of them will survive. “The revolution begins tonight!” Can this odd man from the future manage to actually save the world the world this time around?!

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is a fun, creative film that takes viewers on a wild, non-stop ride with these quirky characters as they attempt to save the world from an AI that will ultimately destroy civilization as we know it, by taking away all the things that make people human—like basic contact, conversation and interaction with one another. The film starts off with a bang, putting the viewer right in the middle of the action, not knowing if this man from the future is crazy (he certainly looks the part) or is actually telling the truth. Sam Rockywell is practically unrecognizable, but gives such an overly-energetic and hilarious performance. Even if this guy is crazy, he certainly believes what he’s saying, and no matter what bad turn things take, he just rolls with the punches and changes course accordingly. He is trying to lead his latest band of misfits to this mysterious AI, but along the way they face many other obstacles—such as two men in masks trying to kill them, mobs of zombie-like students receiving orders from their phones, a murderous couple, a giant kitty centaur, and more. Things get really odd and unexpected, and the closest thing I can liken it to is Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The film is directed by the wildly-talented Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean). Over the course of the movie, we get flashbacks that help flesh out the man from the future’s past and motivation, as well as that of the latest members of his team. We see how technology has touched and possibly ruined each of their lives, and why stopping this AI is a good thing. The ensemble cast is great, and the actors play off one another really well that it leads to some hilarious moments. The film takes some surprising twists and turns, and there’s always some sort of bizarre wackiness happening. It’s just a blast to watch at times, with a lot happening in every scene. At the same time, the writing is quite clever, using the humor to mask a bit of social commentary.

Universal has released Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital. We were sent the Blu-ray release of the film for review, and it looks and sounds fantastic. The picture has a solid level of detail throughout. Brighter scenes look crisp and clean, and even though much of the film takes place at night, the picture still looks rich with a pleasant amount of film grain in these darker sequences. The Dolby Atmos soundtrack provides clear dialogue and an incredibly immersive viewing experience that takes full advantage of the surround channel to put the viewer right in the middle of the manic chaos.

The Blu-ray release includes just a single Blu-ray disc, packed in a standard HD keepcase, along with a glossy cardboard slipcover, and redemption instructions for an HD digital copy of the film. The disc is quite light on bonus material, with just a single 5-minute behind-the-scenes featurette with the cast.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is a fun, unique and creative film. Sam Rockwell leads a humorous and talented ensemble cast, who take viewers on a crazy, wild ride with lots of entertaining twists and turns. Universal’s Blu-ray release looks and sounds great, but is a little lacking on bonus material. That said, the film is quite entertaining and worth a watch. This is definitely a film that you could experience multiple times—just like the man from the future—and still find new things to enjoy each time around.
