DVD Review: SCOOBY-DOO! AND KRYPTO, TOO!

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.”

Scooby-Doo and the rest of his mystery-solving crew return for another fun-filled adventure in the all-new animated movie Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too!. In Metropolis, the Justice League has gone missing, and reporters Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen are trying to figure out what happened. But as they walk through the now abandoned Hall of Justice late at night, they encounter a floating, flaming phantom. They’re not accustomed to dealing with the supernatural, so Jimmy calls up his girlfriend, Daphne, to come and help.

As the Mystery Inc. gang drives into Metropolis, they are shocked by what they see. Without the superheroes there to help, the city has fallen into chaos, with former members of the Legion of Doom causing mayhem and destruction everywhere. As they make their way to the Daily Planet, they dodge attacks from supervillains like Giganta, The Joker (Nolan North) & Harley Quinn (Tara Strong), Solomon Grundy, General Zod, Ursa & Nom, and more. Lois and Jimmy brief them on the mission, and Daphne (grey Griffin) is a bit surprised to hear Jimmy (James Arnold Taylor) refer to her as his girlfriend—they only went to the same summer camp for a week back when they were 9—though this is enough to set Fred (Frank Welker) into a spiral of jealousy.

As the gang heads to the Hall of Justice to begin their investigation, they cross paths with several possible suspects with motives, including food truck owner Helen, who was previously never allowed to park outside the Hall, and valet J.B. who is enjoying having a break from parking all of the elaborate super vehicles. Once they get inside, they meet Lex Luthor (Charles Halford), who has been trying to get Mayor Fleming to allow him to purchase the now-abandoned Hall. They are also joined by super mutt Krypto. In usual fashion, the group splits up to investigate, with Daphne and Fred going in one direction, Velma (Kate Micucci) and Lex in another, and Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), Scooby and Krypto heading for the kitchen. It’s not long before each group finds themselves up against the phantom, or some other mysterious threat. Can the group unmask the phantom, and find the missing Justice League before all the out-of-control villains destroy the world?!

Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too! is a hilarious, creative mash-up that both Scooby fans and DC fans will fully enjoy. It’s very much your typical Scooby-Doo! mystery story and follows the usual template. There’s some “supernatural creature” causing havoc, and the gang tries to figure out who is behind it and why. Along the way, you’ve got Scooby and Shaggy obsessing over food, a musical chase through the Hall with the creature, Velma losing her glasses, lots of puns, crazy costumes, and so on. But the writers have also added in lots of DC elements this time, poking fun of the tropes in both franchises. There’s a particularly hilarious scene early on where Velma loses her glasses and suddenly she becomes invisible to Lois Lane—and there’s another equally-funny reference to this Velma trope later in the film. The Mystery Inc. gang also has a great time trying on various superhero costumes, using their gadgets, and operating their (sometimes invisible) vehicles. Fred’s obsession with Daphne and Jimmy also makes a really fun recurring plot point.

On the other side, you’ve got so many DC characters popping up. The villains are over-the-top versions of themselves. This is especially true of Lex, who reluctantly joined the group after he got lost and locked into the Hall. He is constantly bragging about his wealth and the fact that he’s a former President. Krypto is also a fun addition to the group, but since he just barks, and doesn’t talk like Scooby, his interactions are a bit limited. There are so many fun Easter eggs and references thrown into this movie—many of which probably went over my head as I don’t read the comics and don’t know all of the various villains. You could re-watch this film over and over and still find new things you missed.

Warner Bros. has released Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too! on physical media only on DVD, but it is also available in HD Digital format. While the DVD’s picture is very good, and captures the classic look and feel of the franchise, the SD picture is lacking that slight extra level of clarity that you get with an HD presentation. However, the picture is more than sufficient to fully enjoy the movie. The disc’s audio track sounds great, with dialogue primarily coming from the center channel, and the surround and stereo channels nicely-utilized for the excellent score/soundtrack. There are a couple of fun original songs, during the opening title sequence and the usual monster chase scene. The audio track also provides a nice ambiance and a more immersive experience—this is particularly noticeable in a scene where Scooby and Shaggy are surrounded by the supervillains, and during the big action sequence in the final act of the film.

The DVD disc is packed in a standard-size clear DVD keepcase with a glossy slipcover. There is no digital copy included, but the disc does offer three episodes of the Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? TV series which feature DC character guest appearances. The disc is currently a Walmart exclusive, but should eventually be available elsewhere.

Highly Recommended

Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too! is the crossover mashup I didn’t know I needed, as the Scooby and DC worlds collide for a really fun mystery adventure. Fans of both franchises should have a blast with this film—it’s very clear the writers are huge fans of both properties, making lots of references to, and poking fun at both the Scooby and DC tropes, and filling the story with characters from both universes. While Warner Bros. has only released the film on DVD, fans can still own it in HD via Digital. That said, the DVD sounds and looks great, and includes 3 bonus episodes of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? featuring guest appearances from some DC characters. This release comes highly recommended for fans of either franchise.
