San Diego Comic-Con 2022 – Day 4 Recap

Jul 25, 2022 Posted by in Features | Comments

Sunday of San Diego Comic-Con 2022 was definitely much lighter than the others, with just 3 panels and a press room.

I Hear Voices Panel & Press Room

My final morning of Comic-Con 2022 started off heading into the convention center to room 6BCF for a panel/live edition of the “I Hear Voices” podcast. The podcast is hosted by Kim Possible stars Will Friedle and Christy Carlson Romano. The pair interviews accomplished voice actors, finding out how they ended up in this career, and getting behind-the-scenes stories about the various projects they’ve worked on. At the start of the panel, the hosts made two big announcements, first that the 4-month-old podcast was going to become part of the I Heart Radio family, and second that they would be kicking off a nationwide search for the next big voice over artist, with the prize being a one-year contract with Friedle’s talent agency, and more to be announced.

Next, they brought out Fred Tatasciore to the stage to talk about his long career that spans over 875 credits on IMDb! He talked about finding the voice for a character, his process of preparing for a recording session, and more. Afterwards, they opened things up to the audience to try their hand at voice acting. They put pictures up on the screen, some drawn by Tatasciore during the panel, and people from the audience would step up to the microphone to provide voices for the characters. The hosts were always so upbeat, supportive and encouraging to the folks who tried. The panel closed with a selfie with the audience.

After the panel I headed over to do roundtables at the Bayfront. We got over 15 minutes with each of the hosts. It was a large table but everyone managed to get in a question. The topics ranged from the podcast, to the just announced VO artist contest, to Even Stevens, Kim Possible, Boy Meets World, and more. Christy led us in a live performance of “We Went To The Moon In 1969”, after which she told us how the major ratings of the Even Stevens musical episode is what ultimately led Disney to make High School Musical.

My two videos from this press room will be posted soon, and look for the SDCC panel episode of “I Hear Voices” wherever you get your podcasts.

What We Do in the Shadows Panel

Next I headed to Hall H for the What We Do in the Shadows panel. Before the panelists took the stage, we were given an early look at episode 4 of the current season, “The Night Market”, the biggest episode of the series to date. The episode was hilarious, and if this doesn’t win over new viewers, I don’t know what would. It’s definitely a must-see for tomorrow night!

The panel included stars Kayvan Novak (“Nandor”, via Zoom), Matt Berry (“Laszlo”), Natasia Demetriou (“Nadja”, via Zoom), Harvey Guillén (“Guillermo”), Mark Proksch (“Colin Robinson”), and Kristen Schaal (“The Guide”), as well as Paul Simms (executive producer/writer), Stefani Robinson (executive producer/writer), Yana Gorskaya (co-EP/director/editor), and Kyle Newacheck (co-EP/director). During the lively and fun conversation, the participants talked about the first four episodes of the current season, the process of creating baby Colin, the progression of Guillermo from where he started at the beginning of the series, and more. During the panel we were given a swag ticket that redeemed for a Nadja’s t-shirt.

Funko: Pop Talk Live! Panel

I stayed in Hall H for the next/final panel of the Con, which was for pop culture company Funko. Funko Hosts Brian & Mike did a live session of their Pop! Talk series, bringing in comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias to help introduce the celebrity guests who were being interviewed. The panel started off with a long sales pitch for upcoming Funko products—it felt like one of those Apple events where the superfans ooh and ahh at every single word. “It comes with a box!” (raucous applause). While Iglesias did have some funny moments, the banter between him and the Funko Hosts was so cheesy and forced and painful at times. Fortunately the interviews were a lot better. First up was William Zabka (Cobra Kai), who was hilarious. When they asked him what he collects, his response was “second place trophies”. He went on to talk about how he got started in acting, spending his childhood on sets with his father, and more. When asked what superpower he would want, he said teleportation. Next up was Rosario Dawson (Star Wars Ahsoka), who also had some fun and surprising answers to the questions, especially when talking about her favorite childhood toy. The final celeb to take the stage was Simu Liu (Marvel’s Shang-Chi), who did a back flip on the stage, talked about memorizing the N-Sync discography to try to get a girl, trading away a valuable Magic The Gathering card, representation in movies, and more. When asked If he could be a super hero, what power would he want, the audience broke into laughter. Then he said it would be flight, because with teleportation, you miss the journey, and it’s more about the journey, not just getting there.

As we left the panel, they handed us a swag ticket. All attendees received 2 limited edition Funko Pops. A Hall H Freddy Funko plus one other random one from two different colored Stranger Things Demogorgons, Cobra Kai‘s Johnny, Ashoka or Shang-Chi.

It was so great being back in San Diego for Comic-Con in person again this year. It felt pretty much just like the old days, just with more masks. I was surprised by all of the things I managed to do over the past five days, and already can’t wait for next year!
