As the fourteenth season of Supernatural came to a close, Sam and Dean knew that Jack had to be eliminated, but he was seemingly unstoppable. God provided the hunters with a gun, the Equalizer, with the ability to kill Jack, but at the cost of killing the shooter as well. Dean tracked down Jack in the cemetery, and while Jack was encouraging him to take the shot, Dean couldn’t go through with it. God, extremely upset with Dean, just snapped his fingers and killed Jack himself. Sam, realizing Chuck had just been playing them this whole time, tried to use the gun on God, but it failed, sending the bullet into his own shoulder. Furious, Chuck exclaimed, “Welcome to the end”, and unleashed the souls of hell on earth. Sam, Dean and Castiel were left in one “hell” of a situation, surrounded by zombies.

The final season picks up immediately where we left off, with our trio fighting off an army of the undead, running out of the graveyard with Jack’s body. However, Jack’s corpse is soon taken over by a demon named Belphegor, who claims he liked Hell how it was, and offers to help them escape and fix the problem. Belphegor tells them that all 2-3 billion souls that were in Hell were released when Chuck opened the doors, which means all of their previous kills, and possibly Michael as well, may have escaped. So now the hunters just have to capture or contain the 2-3 billion ghosts and it will all be over. However, the good news is that Chuck has already abandoned their world like he has done to others in the past, and so if they succeed, this will be the last apocalypse they should ever have to deal with. But has Chuck really given up and abandoned them that easily? Also, there is another looming threat—Sam’s gunshot wound from firing the Equalizer at God.

The writers went into this season knowing it would be the last, so they didn’t have to hold anything back. Lots of past characters return, many of whom meet their final fate. As the hunters try to prevent the apocalypse one last time, the show successfully blends an interesting serialized mythology with some fun mission-of-the-week storylines and lots of drama, humor and monsters. After fifteen seasons, the series goes out with a bang, with a wild, fun, and sometimes sad but satisfying final season. The writers have actually given fans two conclusions. First, in episode 19, the writers wrap up the mythology that we’ve been following for past 15 years, ending in what feels like a series finale. However, then there’s episode 20, bringing viewers along for one last Winchester adventure that calls back to the first season. This episode gives closure to the characters, taking an emotional turn, and providing that tearjerker of a finale I didn’t know I needed. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, the finale couldn’t be as massive as the creators had originally planned, but I still found it to be fully satisfying and a great ending to the series after 15 seasons.

All 20 episodes of the show’s final season are split across three Blu-ray discs, plus a fourth bonus disc. Despite having 7 episodes per disc, the picture looks nearly flawless in both darker and lighter scenes, featuring beautiful colors and an excellent level of detail. The audio track provides clear dialogue and an incredibly immersive aural experience. This show sounds amazing, with sounds and effects coming from every direction, putting the viewer right in the middle of all the excitement. This is noticeable right from the action-packed opening sequence of the season. All of the bonus material besides the deleted scenes resides on the separate bonus disc. The extras consists of 17 deleted scenes, a hilarious 15-minute gag reel, the 42-minute The Long Road Home retrospective episode, plus over 75 minutes of behind-the-scenes featurettes, and the show’s final San Diego Comic-Con panel. This is a solid collection of bonus material to close out the series. The only thing missing would have been a commentary on the finale. However, the thoughts of the cast/creators on the finale are pretty well covered in other featurettes.

The discs are packed in a standard multi-disc Blu-ray keepcase, placed inside a cardboard slipcase. Inside is a sheet with the digital copy redemption instructions as well as a foldout episode guide insert.
