Primetime Picks… 9/29/17

Early this morning, Netflix dropped the first season of a new animated series for grown-ups, Big Mouth, from creators Nick Kroll (Kroll Show, The League) and Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy). The series follows the adventures of a group of young teenagers as they discover the wonders of puberty. The series stars an amazingly-talented voice cast filled with recognizable comedians. Andrew (John Mulaney, Mulaney) has just hit puberty and now finds himself being constantly egged on by the Hormone Monster—an invisible creature who is like the devil on his shoulder, always trying to get Andrew to give in to his carnal urges. Meanwhile, best friend Nick (Nick Kroll) still hasn’t experienced his bodily change. While he can’t yet see the Hormone Monster, he does seeks out advice from the ghost of Duke Ellington (Jordan Peele, Keanu, Key and Peele), who happens to live in his attic. Andrew and Nick’s school classmates include wanna-be magician Jay (Jason Mantzoukas, The League, Lady Dynamite), sassy gay Matthew (Andrew Rannells, Girls), Nick’s new girlfriend Jessi (Jessi Klein, Inside Amy Schumer), and the braces-wearing Missy (Jenny Slate, Girls, Lady Dynamite). The voice cast also includes Maya Rudolph (Maya & Marty, Bridesmaids) as the Hormone Monstress (the creature who visits the girls once they hit puberty), Fred Armisen (Portlandia, Documentary Now!) as Nick’s father, and Richard Kind (Red Oaks) as Andrew’s father.

Despite being about kids, this series is certainly not for kids. It has gratuitous nudity and strong language throughout, and it gets pretty wild and out there at times—I checked out the first two episodes, and the first contained a musical number with animated penises playing basketball while the second contained a musical number with a singing tampon. That said, this show had me laughing out loud so many times. The animation looks fantastic and the writing is quite funny—especially the completely inappropriate lyrics in those song parodies. It seems like the show will be giving equal opportunity to all of the characters as each goes through his or her change—while the first episode, “Ejaculation”, is all about the guys, the second episode, “Everybody Bleeds”, deals with the ladies. If the rest of the series is as fun as these first two episodes, I really look forward to seeing more! However, this is certainly not a show I would not want to watch with young kids around.

Tonight I’ll also be watching/recording Marvel’s Inhumans, Z Nation, Room 104, and Mike Judge Presents: Tales From the Tour Bus.

For additional suggestions on what to check out tonight—such as Marvel’s Inhumans, Blue Bloods, Hawaii Five-0, and MacGyver—check out the If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/29/17 post at TVisMyPacifier.com.
