At the end of the first season of MTV’s Teen Wolf, Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin) had become the new Alpha wolf, and had bitten an eager Jackson (Colton Haynes). Now Jackson finds his body fighting off the bite and it is uncertain if he will turn into a wolf—or maybe something else. Scott (Tyler Posey) accidentally revealed his secret to Allison (Crystal Reed) and her father. But Mr. Argent (JR Bourne) agreed to leave Scott alone as long as he agreed to break things off with his daughter. Meanwhile, a bitten Lydia has fled from the hospital and has gone missing, but she, too, is experiencing some strange sensations, and it is unclear as to whether or not she will turn.
Meanwhile, the hunter presence increases in Beacon Hills as Derek tries to secure his own pack—including trying to convince Scott to join his ranks. However, the hunters aren’t the only issue the wolves find themselves up against. Beacon Hills soon becomes home to a mysterious shape-shifting creature. The Kanima is wreaking havoc on the town, seemingly exacting revenge on specific targets. Now Scott, his best friend Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) and the rest of the gang must figure out who/what this creature, who is controlling it and how.
The second season introduces some great new characters, including Allison’s grandfather Gerard (Michael Hogan), who takes the Argent family legacy very seriously, and shows no mercy when it comes to wolves. At times he seems scarier than the wolves themselves! What would he do to Scott if he discovered that his granddaughter was secretly dating a wolf?! There are some new students at Beacon Hill High School this season, including lacrosse team member Isaac Lahey (Daniel Sharman), and loners Erica (Gage Golightly) and Boyd (Sinqua Walls).
I was pleasantly surprised by the first season of MTV’s Teen Wolf, and I didn’t know how they could possibly make the show any better. However, for its second season they have managed to do just that—amping up the the show in every way! Each episode is a perfect blend of action, mystery, thriller and humor. The second season expands the supernatural world of the series, introducing some great new villains and creatures. Each episode is like a perfect little horror thriller, ending in a cliffhanger that makes you anxious to watch more.
I love that the series is not afraid to go dark when needed, and isn’t afraid to kill off characters to advance the story. This also gives a sense that no one is truly safe, and makes the stakes more real. Watching the season over again on DVD, I was quickly reminded how just how awesome this show is! It is hard to pick favorite episodes as they are all so good! The excitement and mystery build over the course of the season, leading to an action-packed, tense season finale that gives some closure but also sets up some interesting new developments for the third season, which premieres Monday, June 3 on MTV.
I really wish MTV/Fox Home Entertainment would give this amazing series a Blu-ray release since it actually airs in HD on MTV. However, I can’t really complain about the picture quality—it looks really great and not a whole lot different from its original airing on the MTV HD channel. The 5.1 audio track captures the dialog and soundtrack, but I didn’t notice a great use of the surround channels. The back of the DVD case says “This series is musically edited”, however I am not sure to what extent this is the case. I would think that these days they would secure all the DVD music rights at the same time as the show goes to air, but apparently that is not the case.
This DVD set contains a pretty extensive set of bonus features, giving audio commentaries, deleted and extended scenes, outtakes, a gag reel and some interviews with the cast and creators.
I highly recommend picking up the second season of Teen Wolf on DVD and catching up before the new season starts!

Final Thoughts:
The second season of Teen Wolf somehow managed to make a great show even better. The action and suspense are amped up, with each episode leaving you anxiously awaiting the next—and, fortunately, if you are watching on this DVD set, there is no wait!
The picture quality is excellent, and just about as good as when I first watched this series on the HD MTV channel. The DVD set also contains a solid set of extras—pretty much anything you could ask for. The only thing I miss from the first season DVD set are the fun cast commentaries.
That said, this show is so exciting, thrilling and entertaining that I can’t recommend this DVD highly enough!
