One of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons growing up was Pac-Man, which was loosely based on the video game of the same name. Pac-Man, his wife Pepper, their child Pac-Baby, dog Chomp-Chomp and cat Sour Puss lived in Pac-Land. Each week, the ghost monsters (Inky, Blinky, Pinky, Clyde and Sue) cooked up some new scheme to help their boss (the Darth Vader-looking Mezmaron) in his quest to locate the Power Forest so he could take control of Pac-Land’s Power Pellets.
The series ran from 1982-1983, and only lasted for two seasons, a Halloween special and a Christmas special. Although, due to reruns, it felt like it ran a lot longer than that when I was a kid!
This year, Pac-man will be returning to our TV screens on Disney XD, with a more modern look. Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures was originally supposed to air in 2012, but no official air date has been announced yet. 41 Entertainment is producing 26 episodes in stereoscopic 3D! While I would love to see this aired in glorious 3D, I highly doubt that will happen.
As for the premise, it looks like the new series has replaced the family man Pac-Man of the 1980’s series with a teenage Pac:
Pac is your average teenage PacWorlder, except for two things:
• He’s a little rounder than most of his fellow citizens.
• He and his family happen to be the only YELLOW PacWorlders on the planet.Beyond that, you’d hardly be able to pick him out of a crowd. That being said, since he’s yellow, he’s fairly easy to spot.
Pac is an upbeat gung-ho teenager and his enthusiasm can occasionally get the best of him. When he’s “on a roll”, which is often, he goes rolling around school and around town at a pretty good clip, and he’s been known to crash, bump, slam and bounce into things on a regular basis.
Pac is a conscientious kid and not like many of his peers who spend their days chasing the latest fads or coveting the newest high-tech gadgets. The fact is, he wants more than that out of life.
Pac wants to make the world a better place and have fun doing it. He wants to know why things are the way they are and when things aren’t working right, he wants to figure out a way to fix them.
