Digital Review: HUNT THE WICKED

May 12, 2025 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

Mysterious and elusive kingpin King Long (Andrew Lin) has been running a massive drug and human trafficking operation in Wusuli City. He constantly manages to evade the police—it certainly helps that he is also secretly the city’s mayor, Song Pa. Pa is currently running for Governor, and in that position he would become unstoppable. King Long has been developing a dangerous, deadly new drug called ice spider, and has partnered up with the city’s various criminal gangs and elements, including the ruthless Dragon Gang. So when his latest drug shipment is robbed by cunning criminal Wei Yunzhou (Andy On) and his wife, he becomes desperate to get the drugs back.

Meanwhile, the city’s hero, Narcotics Squad Captain Huang Mingjin (Xie Miao) and his two rookies are on the case. While investigating the murder of a pharmaceutical sciences professor, they latch onto the trail of the stolen drugs, and Wei Yunzhou. However, Wei Yunzhou seems prepared, and enjoys playing a game of cat and mouse with the cops. He eventually proposes that he and Huang Mingjin team up in order to take down King Long and clean up the city. But as they search for King Long’s base of operations, both men are unsure whether they can truly trust the other.

Hunt The Wicked is directed by Huo Suiqiang, who had first worked with star Andy On on 2022’s Blind War. Hunt The Wicked can be a bit over-the-top and melodramatic at times, but overall quite an entertaining action flick. Andy On is a lot of fun as this robber with a mysterious past. Wei Yunzhou has wonderful chemistry with his wife, who he refers to as “Honey”, and the two make a delightful pair who work together like clockwork, always knowing what the other needs as they execute their plans. Wei Yunzhou is a skilled fighter with an appetite for sashimi, even keeping a sashimi knife on a rope hidden under his sleeve. The action sequences look great, and sometimes feel like the movie was targeted for 3D as Wei Yunzhou launches his rope dart at attacking enemies. Xie Miao (aka Tse Miu) also gets to showcase his fighting skills as Captain Huang Mingjin, who not only finds himself up against Wei Yunzhou, but also taking on gang members and other enemies in a series of shootouts and hand-to-hand-combat. In addition to some explosive action, the fight sequences range from guns & knives, to kicks & punches, and anything else that can become a weapon. Overall the story is a pretty classic one of cop versus robber, who ultimately team up to take down a bigger bad guy.

The film is generally presented in Mandarin, though there are some characters that inexplicably speak (dubbed) English at times, and most signs and documents in Wusuli City tend to be in English. The subtitles are generally well-written and easy to follow.

Hunt The Wicked will be available on Digital May 20, and also available to purchase on Blu-ray & DVD exclusively through Amazon the same day. Normally in my reviews, I would comment on the audio and video presentation of the release, but since I watched this film via a watermarked screener, I’m not sure how it compares to the final quality of the consumer product. The release does not appear to include any bonus material, however, the film is worth checking out for fans of the cast, or anyone just looking for a fun action film.
