DVD Review: ROBOT CHICKEN: THE COMPLETE SERIES

Oct 26, 2025 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.”

The adult stop-motion animated series Robot Chicken, created by Matthew Senreich and Seth Green, aired for eleven 20-episode seasons and many themed specials on Adult Swim since February 2005. While the series will no longer be releasing any more seasons, it will continue to produce quarterly specials. To celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has released a new “Complete Series” DVD box set which brings together over 44 hours of rapid-fire “channel flips” and sketches that parody a wide range of pop culture properties, plus dozens of hours of previously-released bonus material.

Episodes of Robot Chicken run about 12 minutes, utilizing claymation and stop-motion animation via action figures, along with animated mouths to make characters come to life and give a nostalgic feel. The writing is sharp and witty, and is definitely geared to a more mature audience—this series is not for younger kids! The show takes the format of rapid fire sketches, with blips of static inbetween, making it feel like the viewer is flipping through the channels on the TV. Those who grew up in the 80s and 90s will certainly find delight in many of the properties parodied by the series—as I binged my way through episodes, it was like a wave of nostalgia flowed over me, seeing so much pop culture from my childhood referenced on screen. Also, so many amazing celebrities have lent their voices to the characters over the decades. Whenever possible, the series creators tried to get the original voices of the shows, movies and celebrities being parodied for the sketches. There are also many recurring characters that appear over the seasons.

In addition to the many regular 11-minute holiday specials that appeared during most seasons, Robot Chicken also released several 30-60 minute themed specials related to Star Wars, DC Comics, The Walking Dead, Archie Comics, the Discovery Channel and more. These longer-form specials still took on a similar channel-flipping format, but I found these especially fun, with a concentrated take on one property.

Over the years I had just seen a sketch or holiday special here and there, but as I binged my way through this box set, I found myself wanting to keep watching. This show is so fun, entertaining and creative!

Warner Bros. has released the Robot Chicken: The Complete Series only on DVD, which we received for review. The picture quality looks very good for a DVD (animation can be quite forgiving in SD). The series is presented in its original aspect ratio, which up until 2009 was 4:3 full frame, before switching to widescreen in 2010. In either format, the presentation looks really good, with a clean, detailed picture and solid color palette. In the early seasons, audio was only 2.0 stereo, moving to a 5.1 surround around the same time the show went widescreen. Both formats are solid and provide clear dialogue and fun ambiance for the sketches.

The set consists of 24 discs, 2 for each season, and 2 for the specials. These are stacked on overlapping pegs on trays in a thick, clear plastic case, covered with a carboard slipcover. The season discs appear to be a re-packaging of the discs from the previous individual season releases, along with all of their previous bonus material. The first 7 seasons are loaded with fun menus and lots of bonus material, including commentaries on nearly every episode, deleted sketches, behind-the-scenes featurettes and more. There is so much great bonus material that it will take days to get through it all! However, the final 4 seasons are barebones, devoid of any extras, and all just have the same basic episode selection menu.

The 9 specials are split across two discs, but unfortunately all of the bonus material and commentaries that were included on the previous individual disc releases of the Star Wars and other specials have not been carried over. There is just a single 20-minute mockumentary included on the specials discs.

That said, fans who don’t already own the series on disc will definitely want to add this set to their collection. It contains so much hilarious content and wonderful bonus material that will keep you entertained for a long time.

Highly Recommended

Warner Bros’ new Robot Chicken: The Complete Series DVD box set is a must own for any Robot Chicken fan who doesn’t already own the individual season releases. It is mostly a repackaging of the previously-released individual DVD seasons along with two discs containing the specials. While there is loads of bonus material for the seasons, the bonus material that had been included on the previous individual special releases has not been carried over. That said, this show is so entertaining, and nostalgic, and will provided endless hours of entertainment, and certainly lends itself to rewashing.
