Father and titular head of the household is opinionated, long-suffering dentist Ben Harper (Robert Lindsay). And yes, Ben may be the man of the family. But everybody knows who is really running things: his control freak wife, Susan (Zoë Wanamaker). All Ben wants from life is a little peace and quiet. But good luck to him on that, with his three offspring constantly charging off in various ill-considered directions. Oldest son Nick (Kris Marshall) is still living at home. He’s a lovely lad, but just a bit thick. Still struggling to sort himself out, Nick keeps busy with an endless string of truly odd jobs and harebrained get-rich schemes. Teenage daughter Janey (Daniela Denby-Ashe) may be a tad superficial but is no lay-about. She’s a fulltime shopaholic and keeps herself further occupied with a motley parade of questionable boyfriends. Youngest son Michael (Gabriel Thomson) is the brains of the operation – but try as he may, can never seem to keep from getting tangled up in the latest disaster-du-jour. Despite Ben and Susan’s mighty efforts, every week brings on new awkward and hilarious complications. But no matter how crazy things get along the way, the Harpers truly love one another and end up pulling together to find a way out of the latest scrape.
