4K UHD Review: FRIENDS: THE COMPLETE SERIES

Disclaimer: “Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.”

The smash hit sitcom Friends ran for ten seasons on NBC, as part of the network’s “Must See TV” Thursday night lineup from 1994-2004. The series followed the loves and lives of this close-knit group of six friends living in New York City, often either gathering on the couch at the local Central Perk coffee shop, or in one of their neighboring apartments. Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) had gotten used to her parents paying for everything, and so when she decides to leave her fiancé at the alter, she is forced to get a job as a waitress at Central Perk to help pay the bills, and moves in with childhood best friend Monica Geller (Courteney Cox). Monica is a bit of a perfectionist, always wanting things to be done the right way, which can make her a bit bossy, though those are the perfect qualities for a chef. She’s also extremely competitive with older brother, Ross (David Schwimmer). Ross is a paleontologist working at the Natural History museum, who early on in the series learns that his wife has come out as a lesbian and leaves him for another woman. Living across the hall from Monica and Rachel is struggling actor Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), who isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. His roommate is constantly-sarcastic best friend Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), but no one really knows what he does for a living. And rounding out the group is free spirited musician Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), who often seems off in her own world.

I watched Friends religiously when it first aired, but with so much on TV these days, I haven’t really found any time to revisit the show much in the past decade or so—just catching a random syndicated episode once in a while. So I was curious to check out Warner Bros. Discovery’s new 4K release of the series, both to see how the series looks in 4K, as well as to see how well the series holds up.

I’ll start with the latter. As I binged my way through episodes of the series, I was happy to see that the show is just as fun, memorable, and re-watchable as I recalled. I found myself laughing out loud all over again. The characters are so well-defined, each with their own amusing characteristics, mannerisms, quirks and catchphrases. I was instantly sucked back into the series, immediately starting the next episode after one finished. This ensemble is so perfectly cast, and has such amazing chemistry. No matter which characters are paired up, it’s comedic gold. The writing is so clever and witty, and you can tell the actors and writers really understand and live in these characters. There may be the slightly less PC storyline or character (by today’s highly-sensitive standards)—such as the jokes surrounding fat Monica, or Chandler’s trans father (played by Kathleen Turner)—I never found it to be problematic or disturbing—the show still feels like it is firing on all cylinders. While you could pick up any episode and have a great time, the characters also grow and evolve over the 10 seasons. The writers weren’t afraid to pair up some of the friends romantically, or put them “on a break”. The series also had an amazing array of guest stars and cameos over its ten-season run. This all this leads to some iconic and memorable lines and scenes. And the series ultimately builds to a satisfying conclusion.

Friends had originally been released on DVD, but received a nice HD upgrade with a Blu-ray set in 2013. Now, a decade later, the show has been given the 4K treatment. For this release Warner Bros. has made use of 4K scans of the original camera negatives along with Dolby Vision/HDR10, and lossless audio tracks. The picture quality looks great, with a noticeable increase in detail and brighter, richer colors. I was quite impressed with the result—the series has never looked better! (There’s a comparison trailer from Warner Bros. at the bottom of this post.) I’ve never really been a person who complains about no lossless audio option—for years I listened to music in MP3 format and could never tell the difference. That said, these new audio tracks sound great, but whether they are a huge difference over the pervious tracks, I’m not sure. Though I did notice that the laugh track sounded a bit fuller and more immersive at times. Speaking of the laugh tracks, I’m not a huge fan of them, especially in modern sitcoms—the one in The Big Bang Theory is grating at times with laughter when there isn’t even a joke being made—but here it feels natural and enjoyable.

The Complete Series, all 236 original broadcast episodes, span 23 discs—2 for each season, except for seasons 3, 6 & 9, which each use 3 discs. The discs are placed on trays in separate standard-sized 4K keepcases, 2 seasons per case. The 4K discs contain the episodes along with the related audio commentary tracks. The remaining bonus material is contained on 2 Blu-ray bonus discs, which are placed on either side of a standard HD keepcase along with a small booklet detailing the set’s contents. All of these keepcases are placed inside a cardboard slipcase. Overall, I really link this packaging, especially since it is shelf-friendly. No digital copy is included. However, Fandango At Home recently made the series purchasable in 4K digital.

As mentioned earlier, all of the bonus material from the previous Blu-ray release has been ported over. While there is a lot of fluff like these montage clips of guest stars and Gunther previewing the next season’s DVD release, there are also some fun gag reels, a nice behind-the-scenes featurette, and the great 3-part True Friends documentary that was new to the Blu-ray. The bonus disc also includes a few of the extended episodes in SD format. The only new bonus material included in this release are the 13-minute “Friends: Through the Peephole” retrospective featurette (which is quite good), and a 7-question Easter Egg trivia featurette. It’s a bit disappointing that the recent Friends reunion special that aired on Max was not included, nor the rest of the extended episodes that never made it onto the Blu-ray (even if they had just been in SD format like the others).

Highly Recommended

Friends is a well-written, hilarious sitcom that still holds up extremely well decades later. It was a lot of fun to revisit the series on this new 4K release, which looks and sounds amazing. While this new release ports over all of the bonus material from the previous Blu-ray set, it unfortunately just includes 2 short new bonus featurettes, and doesn’t give viewers the Max reunion special, or any more of the extended episodes that weren’t previously ported to the Blu-ray release. This would make an excellent gift this holiday season for any fan of the series, who will certainly appreciate the new presentation. However, those who are double-dipping from the Blu-ray should know they are primarily doing so for the audio/video presentation, and not new bonus material.
