DVD Review: DADDY DAUGHTER TRIP

Dec 28, 2023 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

Larry Bublé (Rob Schneider) constantly has his head in the clouds, coming up with new inventions that never seem to pan out. When he’s not inventing, Larry tries to provide for his family via gig work—the top of his car is covered with emblems for Tyrn, DishDash, Instacrate, Licensed Pet Walker, Lonely Fans, Uger, Uger Eats, Shop Drop Go, Park ‘N Pig, etc—but he’s not very good at that either. His wife Megan (Jackie Sandler) is the more practical one, working as a cashier at the local supermarket. While she supports her husband’s dreams, she thinks it’s about time for him to get a more stable job, such as a bagger at the grocery store. Their daughter, 8-year-old Meara (Miranda Scarlett Schneider), is a dreamer like her father, preferring to draw rather than do her math homework. She has dreams of becoming a cartoonist.

Spring break is coming up and Meara wants to go on a trip like all of her classmates, but the Bublés have no money, and even recently lost their home for failing to pay the rent. Not wanting to disappoint his daughter for the second year in a row, Larry attempts to take Meara on a trip without spending any money—substituting a car wash for a water park, or sneaking onto a farm instead of going to a petting zoo, or watching a drive-in movie from a far away parking lot filled with homeless people. It’s not really working, and Meara is ready to go home. That is, until they cross paths with travel bloggers Fernanda (Mónica Huarte) & Santiago Arachavaleta (Miguel Ángel Muñoz) and their nephew Theo (Gavin Guerrero), and things take a turn for the better. After Mrs. Arachavaleta accidentally hits Larry with her car, the couple worries that he may try to sue them, so they offer to let Larry and Meara join them on their trip, which turns out to be everything Meara had hoped for in a spring vacation and more. Though Larry keeps experiencing a series of mishaps along the way.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. It starts off showcasing Rob Schneider’s physical humor as Larry attempts all kinds of ways to make money, from being a bad rideshare and delivery driver, to donning increasingly ridiculous costumes to be able to give blood multiple times, to dressing up like a silver statue. There’s also a really long fart joke scene—usually I’m not a fan of that humor, but this one got me laughing. The film really kicks into gear when Larry and Meara meet the Arachavaletas. This couple is hilarious with their constant paranoia about Larry suing them, and how they keep getting themselves further into trouble as they continue to accidentally injure Larry. At the same time the film also has a lot of heart. Larry loves Meara, and is doing all of this so that his daughter can have the vacation of a lifetime. At the same time, the Arachavaletas aren’t bad people, and really care about their nephew. Despite being initially annoyed by Larry, they see the way that Meara is able to get Theo to come out of his shell, and so they start to warm to the Bublés. In addition to the main cast, the film has some hilarious supporting and cameo appearances, including John Cleese as a man who cons Larry, Jim Jefferies as a security guard, Dana Min Goodman as Megan’s friend/coworker Karen who can’t stand Larry, several other Schneider family members, and one fun cameo I don’t want to spoil.

Several times during the film, either Larry or Meara is telling some bedtime story, and things switch into animation to bring that story to life. The short stories are really fun, with some creative twists and clever wordplay. These animated sequences ended up being some of my favorite moments of the movie.

Mill Creek Entertainment has released Daddy Daughter Trip only on DVD format for physical media, but it is also available digitally in HD. The SD picture lacks that little bit of extra clarity and sharpness that a Blu-ray would provide, but the picture still looks very nice, and the SD quality never detracted from my enjoyment of the movie. The audio track provides clear dialogue throughout, with a delightful score and soundtrack. The DVD disc comes packed in a standard DVD keepcase with a cardboard slipcover. The disc is surprisingly loaded with bonus material, offering about 12 minutes of deleted/extended scenes, 19 minutes of bloopers/outtakes, a short interview with star/director Rob Schneider, a music video with the cast/crew, and the film’s trailer.

Recommended

Daddy Daughter Trip was surprisingly entertaining, and an easy recommendation for those looking for a fun movie the whole family can watch together. It mixes a lot of physical humor with an overall heartwarming story. Initially I thought I was going to get annoyed by Larry’s antics, but he grew on me, and I especially enjoyed the second half of the film when the Arachavaleta family shows up. Schneider and his daughter make a fun duo to watch. There are also some really entertaining animated shorts that appear during the film. The DVD presentation is solid and the disc contains lots of entertaining bonus material.
