4K UHD Review: THE EXPENDABLES Franchise Exclusive SteelBook Collection

Nov 26, 2023 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

The Expendables franchise unites many of your favorite action stars from the past 4 decades as they team up as part of an elite team of mercenaries for hire, often working with the CIA to help take down dangerous criminals around the globe. The core team includes leader Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), former SAS soldier and knife expert Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), martial artist Yin Yang (Jet Li), sniper Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), demolitions expert Toll Road (Randy Couture), and heavy-weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews). With the fourth installment of franchise now available for home viewing, Walmart has released an exclusive 4K SteelBook collection containing all four films.

Here’s a rundown of the movies, and which big stars appear in them:

  • The Expendables (2010)
Barney and his team are hired by Agent Church (Bruce Willis) to overthrow dictator General Garza (David Zayas) on the island nation of Vilena in the Gulf of Mexico. However, they discover that rogue former CIA agent James Munroe (Eric Roberts) is using the island as a base for his narcotics operation. Meanwhile, a rival mercenary group led by Trent “Trench” Mauser (Arnold Schwarzenegger), is also after the contract. Mickey Rourke also appears as tattoo expert Tool.
  • The Expendables (2012)
This time, the core team is joined by Barney’s protégé Billy “The Kid” (“Liam Hemsworth”), martial arts expert/hacker Maggie Chan (Yu Nan), and Barney’s old friend Booker “The Lone Wolf” (Chuck Norris). Their mission is to stop international criminal/arms dealer Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and his gang, the Sangs. Vilain, along with his second-in-command Hector (Scott Adkins), are planning to steal 5 tons of refined plutonium from an abandoned mine near the Soviet Union, to sell on the black market.
  • The Expendables (2014)
New CIA missions manager Max Drummer (Harrison Ford) tasks the team with apprehending ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), the disgraced former co-founder of The Expendables. Barney turns to his retired friend Bonaparte (Kelsey Grammer) to help him assemble a new team of younger mercenaries—former Force Recon Marine John Smilee (Kellan Lutz). nightclub bouncer Luna (Ronda Rousey), hacker/drone pilot/mountain-climber Thorn (Glen Powell), and soldier/weapons expert Mars (Victor Ortiz). Assisting them with the mission are sharpshooter Galgo (Antonio Banderas), and former team member and medic/knives specialist Doctor “Doc” Death (Wesley Snipes).
  • Expend4bles (2023)
The Expendables team, under the new guidance of CIA agent Marsh (Andy García), is trying to stop mercenary Sumarato Rahmat (Iko Uwais, The Raid: Redemption), a former British national-turned-arms dealer, who had been hired by the mysterious Ocelot to steal detonators for nuclear weapons. Ocelot plans to use the detonators to incite the next World War, and so it is imperative that the Expendables find and stop him. Joining Barney, Christmas, Gunner and Toll Road on the mission are new recruits Easy Day (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Power), who had worked with Barney in the past, and Galan (Jacob Scipio, Bad Boys for Life), the son of former team member Galgo. After Christmas disobeys orders, and ultimately costs them the mission and more, he is pulled from the Expendables, replaced by his former girlfriend, Gina (Megan Fox, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and new operative Lash (Levy Tran, MacGyver). However Christmas can’t sit idly by, and heads off to Thailand to find former Expendable Decha (Tony Jaa, Ong-Bak trilogy), who has a boat that can take him to the South China Sea, and the ship from which Rahmat and Ocecelot plan to launch their nukes from. Christmas quickly proves that he’s an essential member of the team, as he and the other attempt to unmask Ocelot, and prevent WWIII.

The Expendables is a fun, action-packed, popcorn movie franchise, teaming up some of your favorite big name action stars for a thoroughly-entertaining mix of action, suspense, and humor, taking viewers on a new wild ride in each film. The films also doe a nice job of developing the franchise’s core characters over the course of the series, while also bringing in new recognizable stars to join or support the team, or to play the big villains.

While the first three films primarily add to the core cast, the fourth film loses some of the franchise’s longtime stars—Jet Li, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger—and even has Stallone taking more of a back seat, allowing Jason Statham to become the main focus/face of the franchise. While Jason Statham is great in this movie, it feels more like the film is setting up a reboot, passing the torch to a new, younger generation of characters. This is a slight departure from the original concept for the franchise, which started off as this celebration of the huge action stars of the ’80s and ’90s.

Lionsgate’s 4K release looks and sounds amazing. The first three films feature HDR while the fourth offers Dolby Vision color grading as well. The films feature a crisp, pristine picture, with an excellent level of detail, throughout, both during the brighter daytime scenes, and the darker nighttime assaults. The action is captured beautifully. The audio tracks are also really impressive, providing a fully-immersive experience as helicopters hover overhead and explosions and bullets fly everywhere. You can really feel the excitement whenever the action kicks off (which is pretty much non-stop).

This new Walmart-exclusive franchise collection SteelBook includes the theatrical versions of all 4 films on both 4K and in HD, with the extended cut of the third film also offered on the Blu-ray disc. The release includes 8 discs, a 4K disc and a Blu-ray disc for each movie, which are placed on pegs on either side of the beautiful SteelBook case (which can be seen below)—the first 2 films stacked on one side, and the second 2 films on the other. The SteelBook case is placed inside a clear slipcover. An insert provides redemption instructions for a 4K digital copy of the 4-film bundle via Vudu (the films are not Movies Anywhere compatible). For the first 3 films, all bonus material can be found on the Blu-ray discs, while for the fourth film, both the 4K and Blu-ray discs contain the same bonus material. There is hours of entertaining bonus material, which is detailed below, but nothing exclusive that cannot be found on the individual releases for each film.
