Mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his 14-year-old grandson Morty return for ten new adventures in the sixth season of the adult animated comedy Rick and Morty. However, this time around Rick’s portal gun is broken, which means keeping their feet on the ground, and more of the Smith family getting involved in Rick’s antics—though that doesn’t mean their adventures are any less wild and wacky.

I always look forward to a new season of this series—it is so entertaining, with witty dialogue, fun pop culture references, and over-the-top storylines (where do they come up with these things?!). There’s so much happening in every episode, with layer-upon-layer of jokes. This is the type of show that easily lends itself to repeat viewings just to catch it all. This season has many memorable moments and episodes. The writing on this show is so clever and creative—what starts off as a simple idea usually quickly snowballs into something so ridiculously complex, but in a really fun way. We get this in “Rick: A Mort Well Lived” as Morty gets split up into billions of different NPC characters in video games. The episode also plays out like a parody of/homage to Die Hard. I also love when the show goes meta, and there’s no larger example of this than “Full Meta Jackrick”, in which Rick and Morty travel to the Meta Realm to take on the Self-Referential Six. The episodes are always loaded with great pop culture references, even if it’s something as simple as Morty saying “clever girl” in regards to some super-intelligent dinosaurs that make their way back to earth in “Juricksic Mort”. And “Analyze Piss” has a hilarious parody of 2 Unlimited’s iconic song “Get Ready For This” (I think you can guess the lyrics).

Being more (literally) grounded this season, the Smith family gets a lot more opportunity to interact with one another—especially in “Night Family” which finds the family working together against their nighttime counterparts. There is a lot of personal growth for both Rick and Jerry this season, who even go on a couple hilarious adventures together. Throughout the season we get to see various parings of the family members, and we also get a little more backstory on where each member of the Smith family came from. The season also delves into Rick’s latest obsession, hunting down Rick Prime.

Here’s quick rundown of all ten of the season’s episodes:

  • “Solaricks” (22:29)
Portal travel is down, and in his attempts to reset things, Rick reboots all portal travelers, sending them back to their original universes. But the Smith family (or at least some version of them) still manages to find their way back to one another.
  • “Rick: A Mort Well Lived” (22:33)
An arcade gets taken over by aliens and Morty’s been splintered into all of the games as NPCs. As Rick tries to help Morty, Summer sees the chance to “do a Die Hard” to save her brother.
  • “Bethic Twinstinct” (22:05)
Space Beth visits for Thanksgiving, and regular Beth starts to fall in love with herself, causing an uncomfortable situation at the Smith home.
  • “Night Family” (20:51)
The family members utilize Rick’s Somnambulator to create Night-Person versions of themselves to do all their chores for them while they are sleeping. At first things go great, and Rick and Morty wake up to 6-pack abs without having to exercise, but the Night Family starts to rebel when Rick takes a stand against rinsing his plates before leaving them to be cleaned.
  • “Final DeSmithation” (22:40)
When Jerry gets a fortune cookie saying he’s going to have sex with his mother, he’s uber paranoid that that fortune will come true. So Rick helps him investigate the source of the fortune cookies.
  • “JuRicksic Mort” (22:33)
Hyper-intelligent dinosaurs return to earth and fix all the world’s problems, making the humans feel useless. So the president seeks Rick’s help in getting rid of the dinos.
  • “Full Meta Jackrick” (21:22)
After a run-in with Previous Leon, Rick and Morty find themselves in the Meta Realm, where they face off with Story Lord and the Self-Referential Six.
  • “Analyze Piss” (22:28)
After being attacked by a series of 90s-style supervillains looking to pick a fight, Rick takes the advice of his therapist and ignores them. However when Jerry beats one of them up and becomes an intergalactic superhero, Rick gets a bit jealous/annoyed and finds himself donning a super suit as well.
  • “A Rick in King Mortur’s Mort” (22:24)
Morty is goaded into accepting a sword and becoming one of the Knights of the Sun, a cult that lives on the sun and serves as its protector. However, in his attempt to leave the group, the newly dubbed Sir Mortaniel accidentally becomes King, and ends up sending the whole solar system into chaos.
  • “Ricktional Mortpoon’s Rickmas Mortcation” (22:04)
Morty accidentally drops his Christmas gift, a real working lightsaber vertically on the ground. As it rapidly makes its way towards the Earth’s core, the president calls in Rick to save the day. Meanwhile, the rest of the family is unaware that their now good, loving Rick is actually a robot.

Every season this series has some amazing guest stars, and season six is no different. This season some of the folks providing voices include Keith David, Paul Giamatti, Peter Dinklage, Lisa Kudrow, Jason Mraz, Christopher Meloni, Susan Sarandon, Diedrich Bader, Will Forte, John Early, Jack Black, Daniel Radcliffe, Matt King, David Mitchell, and Robert Webb.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has been released this sixth season of Rick and Morty on SteelBook & standard Blu-ray as well as DVD. We were sent the standard Blu-ray release for review. The Blu-ray release looks and sounds amazing. The picture is pretty much immaculate, with rich colors and details. No matter how complex or elaborate the animated sequences, the presentation always looks fantastic. The audio track provides clear (uncensored) dialogue and makes excellent use of the stereo and surround channels to put the viewer right in the middle of all the action, providing a really immersive viewing experience. The episodes and bonus material are all included on a single Blu-ray disc. The bonus material consists of over 30 minutes of behind-the-scenes interviews with the crew, including one 9-minute featurette that is exclusive to this home video release.

The Blu-ray disc is packed in a standard HD keepcase, which is placed in a cardboard slipcover. Unfortunately, this time around there is no insert providing a digital copy of the season.
