Tour guides end the tour at the Needwant; everyone is seated Presentation & Q&A with Gary Hutzel, VFX Supervisor for a visual effects “Show and Tell”

We headed back inside and took our seats in the Needwant for the beginning of the presentations. First up was a visual effects presentation by Gary Hutzel. He showed us how they can use computers to pre-visualize scenes to see how they are going to work. He demonstrated this with some scenes that had been created for Caprica. We also saw some comparisons of green-screened shots of Defiance before and after the effects were added.

Presentation & Q&A with David J. Peterson, Alien Language & Culture Consultant

Next up was David J. Peterson, creator of the 3 alien languages used on Defiance. David also created the Dothraki language used on Game of Thrones. It was fascinating to see how much detail has gone into these languages. David not only created these languages to be spoken & written by the characters at the present time of Defiance, but he also showed how these languages have changed and developed over the years. When a script is written, he takes the portion to be spoken in an alien language and provides the actors with the phonetic pronunciation, the English and alien translations and an mp3 of him speaking the part. For some of the characters, he even mixes in English or other alien languages, depending on the background of the character and how they may have grown up or learned the language.
