TV-on-DVD/BD Pick of the Week

The TV-on-DVD title I am most excited for this week is Mission: Impossible – The ’88 TV Season. For me, this was the original Mission: Impossible TV series as it was my first introduction to the franchise. I loved this show when I was a kid. Each action-packed episode was like The A-Team with spies and better technology. I can’t wait to watch this series again now that I have seen some of the actual original series via DVD.
This DVD set contains all 19 episodes of the first season of the 1988 reboot. It’s great that they were able to closely link this series to the original. Peter Graves reprises his role as Jim Phelps, and actor Phil Morris plays the son of the character his actual father played in the original series. His father, Greg Morris, also returned for an episode in each season of the series.
Hopefully the 16-episode second season will also be announced for DVD soon.

Other titles worth checking out this week are The Amazing Race S4, Smallville S10 and 30 Rock S5.

Also, on Friday, The Smurfs is being released on DVD, Blu-Ray and 3D Blu-ray. I watched this film expecting it to be terrible, and destroy the cartoon series I grew up on. However, I was pleasantly surprised and absolutely loved this film! Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays are so funny–and Hank Azaria is great as Gargamel. The mix of live action and computer-generated Smurfs was seamless to me and never felt totally unbelievable. Huge TV watchers like myself will recognize so many of the actors that appear in this movie from current/recent television shows. Even Tim Gunn appears, to help “make it work”.
