Blu-ray Review: HELL HATH NO FURY

It’s 1941 and French national Marie DuJardin (Nina Bergman) is getting close to German soldier Colonel Von Brückner (Daniel Bernhardt) in order to lead him into an ambush by the French resistance. However, things didn’t go quite as planned and Von Brückner crushes his attackers and escapes with his gold. Three years later, Paris has been freed and Europe is experiencing a string of victories in the war. Marie has been branded a traitor, a German collaborator, and a French whore. She has had her head shaved, has been thrown in jail, and is scheduled to be tarred and feathered. However, she makes a deal with American Army soldier Major Maitland (Louis Mandylor) to help her escape in exchange for leading him to Von Brückner’s gold. But when they arrive at the cemetery, Major Maitland and his unsavory men—Jerry (Timothy V. Murphy), Vic (Josef Cannon) and Chris (Luke LaFontaine)—quickly lose patience with Marie, who seems to be having trouble locating the gold. The soldiers also face some resistance from two French gravediggers—George (Charles Fathy) and Clement (Dominiquie Vandenberg)—who have knowledge of a secret network of badger tunnels below the cemetery. However, they are running out of time to find the gold as a group of German soldiers rapidly approaches to reclaim the gold for themselves. Marie and the others will need to temporarily put aside their differences and work together in order to stop them.

Hell Hath No Fury is based on a true story. The audience is kept guessing as to the truth about Marie and where her loyalties lie, as the film makes use of flashbacks to slowly reveal her past and how she ended up in this situation. The film is tense and action-packed at times, with a strong performance by Nina Bergman as this woman who was unfairly treated and now wants justice. However, the American soldiers feel a but one-dimensional, especially Jerry, who’s the worst of the bunch and is constantly threatening Marie. There’s also this strange side story about one of the French gravediggers having some unrequited love for Marie, and he’s constantly being hounded and taunted about it by the ghost of his dead friend. While some of the action and violence, such as any hand-to-hand combat, is well done and believable, other scenes come off a bit hokey, especially when explosions are involved and people are jumping in the air 80’s TV show style rather than actually being blown up by the blast. In one scene a character can be seen standing next to a grenade when it goes off, but in the next, we see that just his arm was severed, somehow cleanly in the middle, with his hand still holding his gun. I think the story is an interesting one, but the overall approach and execution for the film didn’t quite work for me.

Well Go’s Blu-ray release includes an English soundtrack, though portions of the film are in French and German with hard-coded subtitles. Dialogue is clear throughout, and the film makes excellent use of the surround channel to put the viewer in the middle of the action. Once the bullets start flying, you can hear them coming in every direction, and the audio helps add to the excitement and chaos of the situation. The majority of the film takes place at the cemetery. Sometimes the busyness of the trees in the background affects the overall clarity and detail, but the video presentation is generally quite good, with an overall clean picture. The Blu-ray release is pretty barebones, with no bonus material except for the film’s trailer as well as previews for some other Well Go releases. The disc comes packed in a locking HD keepcase with a cardboard slipcover.

Hell Hath No Fury has an interesting premise, based on a true story about this wrongly-accused woman out to clear her name and get vengeance on those who mistreated her. While the film has some exciting, action-packed moments, some of the acting and action doesn’t quite work. The video and audio presentation are both pretty solid, but the disc doesn’t include any bonus material. Those interested may wish to rent the film first.
