Blu-ray Review: SONS OF ANARCHY Season 7

Mar 02, 2015 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

The seventh (and final) season of Sons of Anarchy picks up shortly after the events of the sixth season. Jax (Charlie Hunnam) is in a downward spiral, letting his emotions get the best of him. He is distraught over his loss, and makes vengeance for Tara’s death his primary goal. Gemma lies to Jax about who killed Tara, and he ultimately puts the club in a precarious position by acting upon this false information. Meanwhile, Juice (Theo Rossi) is in hiding after betraying Jax to Nero (and witnessing what Gemma did to Tara).

Can Jax get control of his emotions and fix the damage he’s done to the club? Will Jax discover the truth about what Gemma did? And if so, how will he react? Can Jax ever escape this violent world of the club, or is he doomed to the same fate as his father?

This final season of Sons of Anarchy is fantastic, bringing a nice sense of closure to the journey of self-discovery that Jax began in the first season. This season is filled with the suspense, action and violence we’ve come to expect from the series. As the club gets deeper and deeper involved in a conflict that resulted from Jax following his emotions, you never truly know who is safe and who will survive—especially since this is the final season.

While the series gets extremely dark at times this season, the writers know how to temper this with humor—and a lot of the humor comes from the club’s new porn studio venture, Red Woody Incorporated. It is a very emotional season, and quite a few of our favorite characters will not make it to the end, but their deaths serve to tell the overall story, and it never feels gratuitous. It is just a harsh reality of this violent world in which these characters inhabit.

Over the course of the season, we get closure to many of the loose threads that have been left around over the course of the series, and the season builds to a very satisfying, poetic and beautiful final sequence.

The main cast members give some extraordinary performances this season, and they are joined by a talented list of guest stars, such as Annabeth Gish as the new, not always by the book Sheriff Jarry and Marilyn Manson as creepy prisoner Ron Tully. Other guests include Courtney Love, Michael Beach, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Jenna Jameson, Leah Michelle, CCH Pounder and Michael Chiklis. Plus some other familiar faces from the past make some appearances.

The Blu-ray presentation looks and sounds amazing. The picture quality is practically flawless, capturing everything is great detail—from the beautiful open road, to the bloody shootouts and everything in between. The audio presentation is also top notch, using the surround channels to bring the viewer right into the action, while also keeping dialogue crisp and clear. The final sequence of the series is a breathtakingly emotional viewing experience on this Blu-ray!

The Blu-ray contains almost two hours of bonus material. While there are no audio commentaries this time around, there is an excellent 2-part documentary that provides an interesting an emotional behind-the-scenes look at the entire season. There are also some deleted scenes, a gag reel and several other themed featurettes.

This final season of Sons of Anarchy is a perfect ending to an amazing seven-year journey that shouldn’t be missed.
