Blu-ray Review: THE OTHER WOMAN

Aug 03, 2014 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

After years of being unlucky in love, Carly Whitten (Cameron Diaz) thinks she has finally met the right guy, Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). They’ve been dating for 8 weeks, and she decides to give him a sexy surprise at his home, but is shocked when the door is opened by his wife, Kate (Leslie Mann). An unlikely friendship forms between the women, and they soon discover that Mark has picked up another hot young new mistress, Amber (Kate Upton). They bring her into the fold and the three women plot their revenge on Mark.

I really enjoyed The Other Woman—the film had me laughing out loud throughout. While Cameron Diaz may be the bigger box office name, it was Leslie Mann who stole the film with her hilarious performance. Kate’s overly-needy, almost stalkery pursuit of Carly, and the fact that she is seeking advice from her husband’s mistress on how to deal with the situation leads to some really funny scenes and situations.

Cameron Diaz also delivers a great comedic performance. First she plays straight woman to Mann’s craziness, but once another mistress enters the picture, she gets to unleash her own off-the-wall humor.

The film also stars Don Johnson as Carly’s father Frank, Taylor Kinney as Kate’s brother Phil, and Nicki Minaj as Carly’s sassy assistant Lydia.

While there are several scenes that we’ve seen played out time and time again in other comedies, the film still felt fresh and fun. Mann and Diaz make a great comedic pair, and I still thoroughly enjoyed these sequences. Also, the unique relationship between the wife and mistresses is something I hadn’t seen before. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also gets some comedic scenes, including a bathroom sequence we’ve seen before, but this kind of “toilet humor” is something that just always seems to work.

The film looks and sounds great on this Blu-ray. The video presentation is crisp and clear, and the audio presentation is equally-impressive. The soundtrack is used to enhance the scenes and add to the comedic feel. As the women are hatching their revenge plan, the Mission: Impossible score can be heard in the background. (I’m proud to say that I actually recognized this music before it got to that iconic portion that everyone is familiar with from the title sequence.)

The bonus features on the Blu-ray are entertaining but pretty slim. However, the film itself is quite enjoyable and definitely worth checking out.

Highly Recommended

The Other Woman is a hilarious film that really showcases the comedic talents of Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz and Kate Upton—Mann’s performance really stole the movie. While there are several scenes we’ve seen many times before, I still enjoyed the humor, and liked that the film provides a fun character dynamic I have not seen before. The Blu-ray looks and sounds excellent, and contains an entertaining, but small, selection of bonus features, as well as a Digital HD copy of the film. I highly recommend checking out this fun movie!
