San Diego Comic-Con 2014 – Day 4

Jul 31, 2014 Posted by in Features | Comments

Sunday of Comic-Con began with packing and checking out of my hotel. Then I headed for the Hilton Bayfront for my final press rooms of SDCC 2014. (I’ll be posting videos from the press rooms soon.)

Across from the Bayfront is the the Gotham Zipline and the Homer Dome. Earlier in the week I walked through here and took some pictures of the Simpsons midway under construction, and of the various #EverySimpsonsEver artwork installations. They were even using a big crane to lay two foam tubes on top of the Homer Dome in order to give Homer his trademark hair.

And just inside the Hilton Bayfront, I discovered one of the most uniquely Comic-Con sights:

My first press rooms for Sunday was for Sons of Anarchy, where we spoke with creator Kurt Sutter, executive producer/director Paris Barclay, and cast members Katey Sagal, Kim Coates, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Theo Rossi, Dayton Callie, David Labrava, Niko Nicotera, and Drea de Matteo. It was a wild room (as you will see in the videos). While we were talking with Mark Boone Junior and Tommy Flanagan, they broke out into song in the middle of my question—and at the end Mark pointed at me saying “this guy should be fired—he never asked a question”, and then proceeded to fire a rubber band at me, which hit me square in the forehead. Afterwards, he looked for it on the ground as he needed it to tie back his hair. And while we were speaking with Katey Sagal, I felt this tapping on my shoulder and someone whispered in my ear “Dude, your composition’s all off”, pointing to my video camera—I turned to discover it was Kurt Sutter.

After the interviews were over, I tried to make a quick run to the bathroom before the next press room. However, as soon as I got to the bathroom, I saw Adam West go in, and security guards were blocking the door. Foiled by Batman!

Next up was the press room for another FX series, The Strain. We were able to speak with series creators Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, showrunner Carlton Cuse, and cast members Mia Maestro, Jonathan Hyde & Kevin Durand, Miguel Gomez & Jack Kesey, and Natalie Brown & Ben Hyland. Unfortunately actors Corey Stoll, David Bradley, Sean Astin and Richard Sammel didn’t make it to our table.

My final press room of Comic-Con 2014 was for FOX’s The Following, where we spoke with stars Jessica Stroup, Sam Underwood, Kevin Bacon and Shawn Ashmore, as well as executive producer Marcos Siega.

Afterwards, I swung by Hall H for the first time this year and caught the final 15 minutes of the panel for The Strain, and on the way out I was handed some swag—a Sons of Anarchy bandanna and a tin of gummy worms for The Strain.

Then I headed to the show floor for one final visit. I took a look at the Outlander booth, which was a huge castle. They had folks dressed up in period garb patrolling the line. There was this hilarious “British” woman from the past who insulted everyone who walked by, staying in character the whole time. When I got my badge scanned at the booth next door to enter a contest, she said “you know they are just going to spam your e-mail.” So I responded saying to the guy running the booth “what does she even know about email? It hasn’t even been invented yet!”. And then she quickly responded to me “you almost had a girlfriend, but not anymore.”

While wandering around some of the vendor booths, I spotted Sam Witwer on the floor, dressed in a BSG costume, along with one of the Heroes of Cosplay women.

To close out the con, I had my annual meet-up with some other bloggers for dinner at the Spaghetti Factory, but I had to make a early exit to get to the airport for my red-eye flight back home. However, when I arrived at the airport I discovered my flight had been delayed.

It was another fun year at San Diego Comic-Con, and a very different experience this time around concentrating mostly on press rooms. I’m already looking forward to next year!
