Syfy Digital Press Tour 2013 – Part 3 – HELIX Set Visit

Nov 14, 2013 Posted by in Promos/Clips, Set Visit | 2 comments

In Part 1 of our coverage of this year’s Syfy Digital Press Tour, I talked about the Welcome Dinner and in Part 2 I talked about the Being Human set visit. In this final post, I’ll cover our visit to the set of the upcoming Syfy series Helix.

Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind’s salvation…or total annihilation.

Helix premieres Friday January 10, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT on Syfy, and comes from Executive Producer sRonald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), Lynda Obst (Contact) and Steven Maeda (Lost, CSI: Miami, The X-Files).

10:30am Arrive Helix. Guided set tour led by Co-Executive Producer Cameron Porsandeh and Director/Executive Producer Brad Turner.

We arrived at the studios and headed inside to the set. Our tour was led by director/executive producer Brad Turner and creator/executive producer Cameron Porsandeh. First, we entered an “elevator” inside the research facility and then made our way through the corridors. They have only built two sets of corridors—one that’s straight and the other curved. With just these two sets, they can film any stretch of hallway needed. These can also be redressed to match whichever floor of the facility is needed—all of the signs and door frames are Velcro and are easily be swapped out. They pointed out some vent covers on the ceiling and told us to remember those as they would come into play later on the tour.

Next we entered a small room with lots of computer screens, each with character profiles (for our benefit). Each side of the room had a large glass window that allowed us to see into an adjoining room. To the left, we could see into a room where a man in a hazmat suit was attending to someone on a hospital bed, while also interacting with a holographic DNA chain. On the right we could see a lab.
