Today Apple released a software update for the AppleTV that adds native apps for HBO GO, Watch ESPN, Wall Street Journal Live, Sky News, music concert/documentary service Qello and animate service Crunchyroll.
Viewers can authenticate access to HBO GO and Watch ESPN via their respective cable company subscriptions, while WSJ Live and Sky News are free. However, Qello and Crunchyroll both require a monthly subscription (each offers a 7-day free trial).
This is great because it means I no longer have to use AirPlay from an iOS device to watch HBO GO—and I was glad to see that Xfinity/Comcast is supported. I find it odd that Xfinity doesn’t allow HBO GO to be viewed via a Roku, but does allow it from Apple’s set-top box!
