The backdrop of Hawaii is both beautiful and an important part of the plot in The Descendants, and so we would like to highlight five other films that highlight the beautiful islands of Hawaii.

From Here to Eternity is a 1953 film based on a novel of the same name by James Jones. The film features an amazing cast, including Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed and Frank Sinatra, and won eight Academy Awards. The film centers on the troubles of soldiers stationed in beautiful Hawaii in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. The film won a myriad of awards, and is often cited as one of the best films in the history of cinema.

Blue Hawaii is a 1961 musical starring Elvis Presley, Joan Blackman and Angela Lansbury. This iconic film was the first of three Elvis films to be shot in Hawaii, and it focuses on a young man who has just gotten out of the army and is glad to be back and able to enjoy the beach, his friends and his girlfriend. The films features beautiful scenes in Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, Mount Tantalus, and Hanauma Bay.

Tora! Tora! Tora! Is a 1970 film that dramatizes the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The title is made up of the code words that the Japanese used to indicate that complete surprise was achieved in their attack. Tora! Tora! Tora! won an Academy Award for Best Special Effects, and clips from the film have been widely sampled in other films and television shows because of their stunning visual effects and historical accuracy.

Lilo & Stitch is a 2002 animated film about a genetically modified alien named Stitch who escapes to earth and is adopted by a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo. The film features many beautiful animated Hawaiian landmarks, and island activities like hula dancing, surfing and learning the meaning of “ohana.” The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a 2008 film starring Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis and Russell Brand. The story focuses on Peter (Segel), who decides to go on a relaxing Hawaiian vacation after a tough break up… only to find his ex there with her new boyfriend! This hilarious movie was filmed in the real life Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Oahu.
