TV-on-DVD/BD Pick of the Week

I feel like I should be twice my age with the picks I’m making this week! πŸ™‚
However, I’m really excited for the release of the first season of Father Dowling Mysteries on DVD! The series stars Tom Bosley as Father Frank Dowling and Tracy Nelson as Sister Steve, a mystery-solving, crime-fighting clerical duo. This show was a lot of fun and featured a lot of great guest stars, including Leslie Nielsen, John Slattery, Diane Ladd and Peter Scolari. This 2-disc release includes the pilot TV movie plus the 7 other episodes that comprised the show’s short first season. While I have all of the episodes recorded somewhere on VHS, I no longer have a VCR connected to any TV, so it is great that episodes are now coming to DVD!

My blu-ray pick of the week is the second season of Downton Abbey. It arrives almost 2 weeks before the season has finished airing on PBS here in the US! In the second series, the first World War has arrived and things have changed a lot at Downton Abbey, which has been turned into a convalescent home for wounded soldiers.
It defies all logic why I continue to be so invested in Downton Abbey. Just the words “costume drama” or “PBS” or “Masterpiece Theatre” should have been enough to send me running. However, each week, the mystery and intrigue keeps me totally glued to the TV. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series so far. This 3 disc set includes the entire second series (including the Christmas episode) in their original, unedited UK format as well as several informative historical and behind the scenes featurettes.
